We treat children starting at 12 years old but will consult and assess those as young as 10. Although we generally avoid hands-on treatment for children under 16, it may be necessary in some cases. Typically, we encourage children under 16 to engage in exercise therapy and rehabilitation, along with following home recovery advice, as they are generally resilient and capable of self-healing. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent of chaperone.
About Your Appointment
Your first appointment will begin with an initial consultation to discuss your injury or complaint. You’ll be asked to fill out a consultation form with personal details and sign a disclaimer to consent to treatment.
We will conduct both subjective and objective assessments, which may include postural evaluation, joint range of motion assessments, movement screenings, special tests, strength and muscle testing, and biomechanics and gait analysis. This consultation is essential for us to understand your medical history, any previous injuries, your current injury or pain, your movement patterns, and how these issues impact your daily life.
This information allows us to create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Depending on the time required for a thorough consultation and assessment, hands-on treatment may also be provided during this first visit.
Every treatment session includes a thorough assessment based on your specific injury or complaint, as well as the nature and history of your symptoms. Treatment sessions may involve the following modalities:
Rehabilitation and exercise therapy
Sports & remedial massage
Soft tissue therapy
Joint mobilisations
Stretching and muscle energy techniques
Strapping and taping
Dry needling (medical acupuncture)
Pain management and injury advice
After treatment, we will discuss and provide you with management and aftercare advice. We will prescribe exercises, and if necessary, an exercise plan to support your rehabilitation at home will be emailed to you.
New patients are required to book an initial consultation & assessment which will last approximately 60 minutes. Follow up appointments will be advised according to your pain, injury or complaint and may last for 60, 45 or 30 minutes.
To conduct a thorough assessment and treatment, it’s likely that we’ll need to ask you to remove some clothing and it may be necessary to undress to your underwear. You are welcome to wear shorts for your comfort and dignity if preferred.
Please wear exercise attire or loose-fitting clothing to your appointment and ensure the injured or painful area can be easily accessed. For example, if you have issues with your hip or knee, please bring shorts.
If you have long hair, please tie it up for treatments involving your upper body, neck or shoulders.
For female patients, kindly refrain from wearing sports bras during upper body treatments, as they may restrict access and make treating your back and shoulders difficult.
Please bring anything that may help with your diagnosis. For example, if you have had previous investigations, scans or x-rays, please bring a copy of your reports or consultancy letters if possible. If you’re a runner with a running injury, please bring your trainers for us to assess.
The goal of treatment is for patients to experience reduced pain, improved mobility, increased range of motion, and a greater sense of freedom. Many individuals often leave treatments feeling physically and mentally uplifted. This positive outcome is typically achieved through focused hand-on treatment that targets areas of pain and discomfort, improves blood flow, and triggers the release of feel-good hormones.
However, it’s important to note that sometimes your original symptoms may temporarily change or worsen, and you might feel more tender, sore, or even bruised as your body adjusts and undergoes healing. This is often described as symptoms feeling worse before they improve. Fatigue and headaches, especially following treatment focused on the head, neck, and shoulders, are also common. Please rest assured that these reactions are perfectly normal.
If you have any concerns about how you’re feeling, please don’t hesitate to contact us for further advice. Typically, you should begin to feel better within a few days after treatment.
Pain thresholds vary from person to person, so what might be painful for one individual may not be for another. We are skilled in understanding each person’s tolerance for pain and can quickly determine the appropriate level of pressure and techniques to use. While sports massage and soft tissue therapy techniques are often considered ‘painful’, we do not believe that firmer pressure always leads to better outcomes. We prioritise a therapeutic alliance between patient and therapist, ensuring that treatment always remains within your personal pain threshold. We will regularly check in with you during treatments to ensure your comfort, and we welcome your feedback at any time. Due to sensitivity, biochemistry, and condition of tissues, some discomfort may occur. This is often referred to as “good pain” and typically indicates that the problematic area is being effectively treated.
The number of appointments needed varies based on how quickly your body responds to treatment and rehabilitation. Each person heals and progresses differently, even for the same injury or condition, influenced by various factors. While some individuals experience significant improvements after just one or two sessions, others improve over time and more complex cases may require a series of treatments spanning several months.
We approach treatment on a session-by-session basis and do not set a specific number of appointments upfront. Instead, we guide you through your recovery, monitor your progress closely, provide rehabilitation advice, and equip you with the tools for home recovery. Our goal is to support your healing process effectively. While we avoid unnecessary appointments, we recommend regular maintenance treatments to maintain good soft tissue and joint health.
